Burton United F.C.

Burton United Football Club was an English football club from Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire that played in The Football League between 1901 and 1907, before folding in 1910.

History

The club was formed in 1901 when struggling Football League Club Burton Swifts amalgamated with Midland League (and ex-Football League) club Burton Wanderers. It was unusual for a smaller town such as Burton to host two Football League clubs so it was hoped the merger would see an upturn in fortunes for the United club.

The new club took Burton Swifts' place in the Second Division of the Football League and took over residence at their Peel Croft home. However, the new club were again not really successful, and never finished above 10th place or made it past the first round of the FA Cup. In 1905 and 1906 the club finished in second last place, and in 1907 finished bottom. The club was then voted out of the Football League.

The club dropped into the Birmingham & District League, and in 1909 also became members of the Southern League. However, at the end of the 1909-10 season, the club had finished bottom of the Birmingham & District League, and second bottom of their Southern League division, and subsequently folded.

Senior football did return to the town when a new club called Burton All-Saints were formed. In 1921 they joined the Birmingham & District League and three years later the club became known as Burton Town and were league champions in 1928. After some good league and FA Cup campaigns the club joined the Midland League in 1935 for four seasons before returning to the Birmingham & District League in 1939.

After World War II the club was not revived and Burton was without a senior football team for a number of years until 1950 when the present day Burton Albion was formed. Albion competed in the Football League for the first time in 2009-10 season following promotion from the Conference league.
